FEATURED FREELANCER/PARTNER: AMANDA SABER

We are excited to spotlight Amanda Saber, our March featured freelancer and Uncompany partner, during Women’s History Month. She’s a seasoned educator, talented writer, and awesome mom. Basically, a super woman. 

Tell us about your freelancing business and how long you’ve been freelancing. 
I’ve been freelancing alongside teaching for about three years. When I decided to take leave from teaching for the 2021-22 school year, I started focusing on building Saber Every Word alongside momming. 

I am writing and editing for a variety of clients, including copywriting for Uncompany! I’ve been researching and writing blog articles, writing and revising professional bios, crafting social media posts, and copywriting marketing materials. 

What made you decide to focus more on your freelancing business?
Teacher burnout + pandemic + second baby = shifted priorities. 

You can read the long version here, but the CliffsNotes version is this: I wanted a schedule that was more flexible to accommodate my family. I wanted to have my nights and weekends back and spend more of my time doing things I want to do rather than work I have to do. And the pandemic has taught us all that you can’t continue to put things off until ‘later’ because you just never know what ‘later’ is going to look like. It’s been a major change but a really good one overall. 

Share a freelancer “win” or something you are most proud of (even if it isn’t related to your business).
I’m really proud of myself for simply taking this risk. I’ve always enjoyed writing and often thought about making a career out of it, but hitting pause on a predictable paycheck with two young kids felt a bit irresponsible. I am still pretty shocked that I was brave enough to give it a try.

Also, seeing the first piece I had written actually posted to my client’s website was really exciting, even if I didn’t get the byline!

Why are you excited to be the featured freelancer during Women’s History Month? 
It’s hard not to think about women’s contributions to society without attaching ‘motherhood’ to it, though obviously there are countless women who are not mothers who deserve recognition, praise, and gratitude. 

I was gifted the opportunity to raise two boys. I want them to grow into open-minded adults who presume all women – well, all people – are fully capable, intelligent, strong humans. If I can model for them that women can play many roles equally well – mother, professional, friend, muffin-baker, lawn-mower – then I hope they will come to expect no less from every other woman they meet. 

What would you tell other women who are considering starting their own business?
I think many women feel committed to their roles, whether that is spouse, parent, or second-in-command, so maybe they just need to hear someone say, “It’s ok to try something new.” 

Start slow, build confidence, and then go for it! Find people in your support system who will encourage you and cheer you on. They are invaluable to give you a boost when you need it. 

Is there anything else we should know about you?
I love to travel. I traveled outside of North America for the first time when I was 25, and I’ve since visited 19 countries with many more on my “Must See” list. I’m thinking “working” as a travel writer in my retirement years will be a good way to see the world.
